art & photo

process
In class, the students rotated around the classroom adding different elements to each others canvases. The project was geared towards repetition and pattern, and it was up to each student to revise what had been added to their canvas. Though I was not in class during this exercise, I have chosen the painting displayed behind me to describe. This piece was created using paint on cavas, with a mixture of brushes and pallet tools to apply. The background was painted first, and the artist used a tool to add paint and texture for the foreground of flowers and grass. Rather than blending the paint into a smooth finish, the artist chose to create texture for a more realistic and 3D effect to this modern interpretation. Elements and Principles of Design:
-
Color - this artist created contrast by using blued and greens in the background (sky and stems) and reds and yellows in the foreground (flowers)
-
Texture - artist used pallet knives and various other texture tools to create uneven, natural finish
Overall reflection:
Because of previous art classes, I had some knowledge of the various elements of design. however, through this project I learned about how those elements can be combined and applied to create the principles of design in a work of art. I especially look forward to using the principle of Movement Rhythm within one of this class' projects. Hopefully next time I can be present during the classes where this project occurs.
