Process:

After learning about how a line of perspective is used in art, I chose a picture that had a clear line of perspective. To create a realistic piece, I drew a horizon line and a vanishing point on my printed out photo. I used this as a reference for my final project so that the colors and dimensions would be as accurate as possible. I first sketched out the image in pencil on my final paper. The medium I chose to use was acrylic paint, with the addition of some black and white pen. Because of the image that I chose, it was necessary for me to use painters tape to create perfectly straight lines to the vanishing point.

Critics:

  • Dustin suggested that I use contrast to make the shape of the clouds more distinct and realistic.

  • Maya suggested that I use texture in the painting of my clouds so there is a clear distinction between the foreground and the background.

  • Ms. Johnson suggested that I focus on the direction of my lines on the plane wing to ensure that they are all meeting at the vanishing point.

Elements and Principles of Design

Elements:

  • Line - Aside from the obvious use of line for this project (1-point line of perspective), I was careful when choosing direction and color value of each like to create a realistic end result.

  • Texture - I used texture most in the cloudy foreground of this image, but it was also important in the plane's wing to show the sleek, hard surface.

Principles:

  • Variety - When an artist places different visual elements next to one another, he/she is using variety. Through juxtaposition and contrast, I placed organic vs geometric shapes together to display variety when I painted the straight lines of the plane next to the unpredictable shapes of the clouds in the sky.

  • Proportion/Scale was important in this project to create a realistic perspective. While working on this, I kept in mind the size and width of the end of the each line compared to its beginning. For example, the thick black lines fade gradually as they get father from the viewer's eye.

Overall reflection: (What did you learn? What are you proud of?  What would you do differently next time? Etc.)  Please write a brief paragraph using complete sentences.

This project taught me a lot about the use of artistic elements and principles, especially when incorporating them into a one or two point perspective image. Because the object in view is 3D, its elements change as it gets further or closer to the viewer. This meant that color, value, texture, line, shape, and much more were essential.  I am proud of the final that I ended up with, but there are a few things I would do differently next time. I would have liked to work a little more on the fluffy clouds behind the plane, to make them as realistic as possible. It took me a while to complete, but I am very pleased with the result.
