Process:
I created my project l by .choosing a landscape image, griding this image, and scaling the dimensions (x1.5) to create a final that is 9"x15". This grid allowed me to create a more realistic final. I sketched out the image in light pencil, and began with adding simple line art using a Faber Castell .50mm ink pen. Some the foundational lines were finished, I filled in the darkest parts of the abstract mid-ground with solid black acrylic paint, leaving only the boxed portions empty. These boxed portions were completed with much more detail, and using a variety of H and B graphite pencils. Finally, I used cool toned purple, blue, and red watercolor paints to fill in the sunset.

Mid-project Check-in:
Criticisms:
-
Dustin suggested that I make very clean lines in the abstract portion of the image and more shading in the detailed boxes.
-
Darries suggested that I use cool toned colors to paint the sky so that the mountains stand out.
-
Ms. Johnson suggested that use acrylic paint or black paper for the abstract shadows to make the contrast between light and dark less subtle, more of a clean distinction. She also suggested that, if I were to do this project again, I could add more lines in the bottom portion to show the different between the ground and the hill in the immediate foreground.
Final:
Reflection
Elements:
-
Color/Value - I chose only use color in the background of this image, and because of this the mountains are framed nicely by contrast
Principles:
-
Contrast - The opposing mediums, details, and color choices are all examples of contrast in this piece.
-
Unity - There are many elements and principles of design incorporated into this piece, but the image has a continuous style that creates unity
Overall reflection: (What did you learn? What are you proud of? What would you do differently next time? Etc.) Please write a brief paragraph using complete sentences.
Through this project, I learned about how to use contrasting mediums, styles, and element/principles of design within one image. The contrast I chose to use was both in the color of foreground vs. background and in the detail of inside vs. outside the two boxes. The image portions inside the boxes were created using graphite, the background was painted with watercolor, and the main foreground was pen and some black acrylic paint. These three things were interesting to work with in one image because of the unexpected compatibility. It was a challenge for me to use only pen in the foreground, and I would have added more lines with pen to show texture of the ground in comparison to the smooth hills.
